Happy Merdeka, Malaysia!

Last night was Merdeka Eve for us Malaysians. Every year at midnight of 31st August, Malaysians celebrate the nation's Independence Day with family and friends, traditionally at locations of interest such as Merdeka Square and Putrajaya.

The Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition 2013 kicked off last night during Merdeka Eve with team Malaysia's brilliant display of lights and colors. I took this chance to further my photographic explorations with my first attempt at multiple exposure photography to capture the brilliant and vibrant fireworks display at night. I took a lot of photos, but for now let me share just one of them...

Click on the photo above for a bigger view!
I shall update this blog with more photos later with explanations of how I shot the fireworks photos and some of the post-production involved. Until then, Happy Merdeka, Malaysia!

P/S: Happy Independence Day, Trinidad and Tobago (this one is for my dear friend, Kristen!)

Yellow Hot Air Zeppelin [Mellow Yellow Monday]

Photo of a hot air balloon bearing the name Zeppelin and the brand Caterpillar (CAT).
Taken during the Putrajaya International Hot Air Ballon Festival 2009.

I would really love to get a ride in one of these hot air balloons someday. I have at least two reasons for wanting this: one would be so that it would help me face my slight phobia of heights, and also so that I would be able to take amazing birds-eye photos of landscapes and sceneries of urbanscapes and/or nature.

United Buddy Bears in Kuala Lumpur

Last December I took the opportunity of the month-long break I had from work to do some bit of photography. A Sri KDU student, Zoey informed me that "the buddy bears are at the Pavilion" so I headed over there in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to see what sort of thing the buddy bears are.

So I drove my car and parked at one of those shady unofficial parking spots a few blocks away from the Pavilion, since parking at the Pavilion and any of the surrounding areas in Bukit Bintang is either almost impossible or expensive. Walked my way to Pavilion whilst praising myself for the parking decision I made earlier, the traffic jam going to and leaving from Pavilion was a total nightmare. As I neared the place, I immediately saw them --- the Buddy Bears.

More than a hundred of these colorful bears were lined up on the pedestrian sidewalks and the plaza in front of Pavilion. The bears are part of an exhibition called the United Buddy Bears and they'll be staying in Kuala Lumpur for about two months or so.

For most of the exhibition, the bears are meant to represent a country and each of the bear was painted and decorated by an artist from the country it represents. The motifs and decorations on the bear tell you a bit about the country and the culture it represents. I naturally looked around for the Malaysian buddy bear and thankfully the organizers had arranged the bears in alphabetical order according to the official UN listing of the  name of country, so finding the Malaysian bear wasn't as hard as performing an ant swarm optimization algorithm to pinpoint the location of the said bear.

Anyways, I took lots of photos of the bears representing many countries, but for the purpose of this post, let's start with the Malaysian bear.

The Malaysian Bear was painted by Mr. Abdul Rahim Muda, the Malaysian artist most commonly known as Imuda. He was famous for his comic strips in Malaysian newspapers since the 1980's until now and for some time acted in some popular Malay comedy sitcoms in the 1990's.

I took the chance to explore the details of Imuda's way of expressing Malaysia through his artwork on the Malaysian bear. And of course, front and center, the image of Malaysia being multicultural is prominently displayed on the belly of the bear.

Cultures / Race represented: Sikh, Sarawakian (represented by the hornbill), Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Sabahan (represented by the orangutan)
Each major race is shown wearing their respective traditional attire, and the bear itself is wearing a Baju Melayu --- either to express that the Malays are the main race of the country, or that because Imuda the artist that worked on the bear is Malay. Either way, it is not immediately evident because that particular detail is not as prominently presented as other ideas in the artwork.

On the left elbow of the bear is a Malaysian traditional kite, the Wau Bulan. This particular type of kite is meant to represent the traditional pastime of the Malays, especially those from the East Coast where the weather can be particularly windy. The Wau Bulan is one of the iconic representatives of Malaysia and is used extensively in many things, such as currency (the Malaysian 50 sen coin and RM 1 banknote) and corporate logos (Malaysia Airlines).

Closer to the um, crotch of the bear is the rafflesia flower, known as the largest single flower on the planet. It is commonly found in East Malaysia, especially Sabah. East Malaysia, situated on north of Borneo island, though separated from most of the mainland states by the South China Sea, is a very important part of the Malaysian multicultural identity, and is famous for numerous tourist and ecotourism attractions.

The underarm (armpit, really) of the bear shows the Malaysian national flower - the Bunga Raya or hibiscus. It is shown here as a motif on a batik cloth, a traditional type of cloth and art motif common to the Southeast Asian region, used extensively in modern and traditional clothes.

The face of the bear is in my opinion a way to show the identity of the artist, as he normally draws his cartoon characters with big round shiny eyes, glowing cheeks and a big smile.

The United Buddy Bears will continue to be in Kuala Lumpur until 15 February, so if you haven't seen them yet, do take the time to check them out. There are more than just country bears, some bears have special dedications on them and some have great messages as well. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the world and about the message of tolerance across different cultures and faiths! Check out www.ubb-kualalumpur.org for more details about the exhibition.

Next I shall feature another bear representing another country, so be sure to stay tuned!

[Video] Truth that Cannot Be Covered - Bersih 2.0 09/07/2011

Here's another video that I think is worth sharing.

I leave it up to the viewer to digest and interpret what can be observed in the video, and I choose not to force my own opinions on others.

But I have to make one confession though. The 9th minute onwards of this video made me cry for almost one hour. The final three and a half minutes of the video got in really deep into my empathic self.

So please, if you watch this video, please watch it in its entirety, then draw your own conclusions.

P/S: I think it was announced that the authorities wants to release a video compiling all the good work of the police and the authorities during the rally. If anyone knows where I can find the video, please do tell me, I would say that that video is worth sharing as well.

Kellie's Castle

Kellie's Castle, originally uploaded by ihsankhairir.

Another shot of the ruins of Kellie's Castle in Batu Gajah, Perak.

Most of the architectural design of the castle are of Moorish origins. The castle was never finished because the owner died of a disease during its construction, and so it was abandoned.

Cinderella Castle is Really NOT That Tall!

Orlando Day 2 - Disney's Magic Kingdom

We went straightaway to the Magic Kingdom later in the afternoon, right after we left Animal Kingdom.

zul 482

This is right in front of the entrance to Magic Kingdom. You'll find a lot of people here just standing or sitting around, either having pictures taken, waiting for someone, or just people watching.

The Toontown Fair is where you'll find lots of fair-themed shops selling lots of Disney merchandise. Although it looks like a town or country fair, the prices are not like those you find at fairs! But they are all really wonderful souvenirs, I wish I had more cash on me to grab some of them home, especially the wonderful hats and plush toys.

disneyhisham1 105
I stank of Stitch's breath for the rest of the night after the Stitch's Great Escape 'ride'. The ride involves experiences in light, sound, sense and smell! There's a part where you get sprayed with Stitch's slobber and where he belches on your face, you can feel the heat of his breath and smell the hotdog and mustard!

disneyhisham1 107  zul 512
If only these Stitch hats were any cheaper... I love the fancy hats and one hundred times more if they were of Stitch. I can say that Stitch is definitely one of my favorite Disney characters. Being poor students, we did what any poor student would do in a Disney park souvenirs shop --- wear hats, take pictures, put hats back on shelf. Grab another hat. Repeat.

zul 513

We stayed until the night to experience the night parade and the fireworks.

disneyhisham1 109

For the night parade... we couldn't find a good place to sit, so we
stood for an hour in the middle of the crowd, with people
pushing and pushing to get a good view of the colorfully lit Disney
characters parading with lightbulbs and LED costumes.

Ariel, from the Little Mermaid. Not as skimpy as the cartoon version, haha.

Cinderella Castle at night. The castle was constructed to make it seem like it's really big and tall, but it's really not that tall. They use forced perspective in the construction of the castle, because according to the local regulations, any structure taller than a certain height must have a red blinking beacon at its pinnacle. Since this will interfere with the 'magical' theme of the castle, they built it shorter than the regulation height, but incorporate the forced perspective so that the castle would still look big and commanding.

And I was too mesmerized by the fireworks that I didn't take any photos! But pictures won't do it justice, you have to experience it for yourself!

Next: Disney MGM Studios!

Never Too Old to Be a Disney Fan!

The first of our 2-day Park Hopper quest... Disney's Animal Kingdom. We took the 9am shuttle from our hotel near Downtown Disney and arrived at Animal Kingdom about 20 minutes after.

Park Hopper is one of the Disney Park packages offered that allows you to go to any of the Disney Parks in Orlando (Magic Kingdom, Disney MGM, Animal Kingdom) for unlimited number of times within the span of 48 hours. It is much cheaper than buying day passes at each park, especially if you plan to go to more than one Disney Park in a day.

It wasn't even 10 am yet and Animal Kingdom was full of people. Unless you've waited at the gates since before the park was opened early in the morning, you would always see hundreds of people around --- tourists, families, field trip groups, and of course the park staff.

disneyhisham1 076
A picture before entering the park. There were 3 signboards for Animal Kingdom... one with an elephant's head, one with a dragon's head, and other one I can't remember (someone help me on this, please). We chose the elephant's head. No particular reason though. Maybe because it was the middle one.

We saw the enormous Tree of Life from afar. One look and one might think it's a real tree, but in fact it's man-made. Inside the tree is a theatre where we got to see a Bug's Life 3D presentation, which was definitely a lot of fun.

The Tree of Life's bark is full of animal motifs... we can spot a few obvious ones from afar, but for some they are so small or hidden you really have to search.

A cute set of statues of Huey, Dewey and Louie with Daisy hiking along a small  stream. It looked like Daisy was really waving at us.

A must-do for anyone visiting a Disney park... photo sessions with the main Disney characters. We lined up for about 15-20 minutes to meet and greet Mickey and Donald. One of my friends remarked that all of us seemed too old to be doing this, but everybody does it anyways regardless of age, so we waited in line, being the only bunch of twenty-somethings without a kid in the group taking pictures with Mickey and Donald. I didn't think it was childish at all. Someone's that insecure, I guess. Anyway I had fun shaking hands with them, Donald even tried scanning the barcode on one of my friend's t-shirt, which I found amusingly hilarious.

disneyhisham1 016
Then we went to a Lion King's musical theatre presentation... which was awesome. Being the only Disney fan in the group, I was the only one among my friends who was able to sing along to the all the Disney songs they sang in the musical, even though my singing voice some would prefer not to hear at all. A lot of singing, a lot of dancing, awesome choreography. One performance I found most entertaining was a group of acrobatic 'monkeys'--- they were really good at doing flips and jumps and balancing acts, it seemed more like a themed circus show to me at times. Definitely an entertaining presentation I must say, the performers have really done an awesome job, no doubt.

P7270065  IMG_0148 P7270087
Then there was the African safari ride, the Everest ride that we didn't have time to go to, and the dinosaur show that we didn't see. All because of time constraint and the weather, which seemed like it was about to rain, and it did, for a couple of minutes, which caused a lot of the outdoor rides to be closed, but then afterwards the sky cleared. I feel bad for the people who lined up for 90 minutes for the Everest ride only to find out that it was closed because of the lightning, thunder and rain. I was glad that I abandoned my waiting in line for Everest, otherwise it would've been a waste of one hour of my time.

The sky cleared in time for the 4 pm parade. The main 'streets' were closed, thousands of people lined up the sides of the streets to watch the colorful parade. We were fortunate enough to find a good spot to sit and watch without having to stand for hours.

...

After the parade, we left Animal Kingdom via shuttle to our next destination - Disney's Magic Kingdom.

Insects Mating after Feb 14th

The day after February 14th, we went for a family getaway in Batang Kali, Selangor where my uncle owns a piece of hillside land that includes a brook / river creek and a riverside shack.

Most of the family, after having breakfast, went for a dip in the brook and literally stayed there till evening. I joined them for a bit before grabbing my camera and traversed along the brook looking for small creatures to shoot. And I got a few that I liked.

Dragonflies Mating

I saw a pair of dragonflies flying around, one chasing the other, so I followed them until they stopped and landed on a blade of grass. The dragonfly in front started to attach the tip of its abdomen on the neck of the second dragonfly.

After that, the second dragonfly attached its abdomen tip onto the underside of the first dragonfly...

Hard to say which one's male and which one's female. I'd say the one behind is male. Notice that they form a kind of heart shape in the process. The nymphs are conceived in love!

The Mating Water Striders

Capturing any decent pictures of the water striders was really hard. I had a hard time focusing on any of them due to the small size, the amazingly clear water (made the AF focus on the objects in the water) and their superfast and sudden movements. I spotted an extraordinarily large one which wasn't as fast as the others, and it wasn't until I took a picture that I realized it wasn't a large water strider, it was a pair of water striders mating!

You can kind of see how the weight of the both of them bend the surface tension of the water.

They also dance along the surface of the water while they're at it!

...

I have more pictures of other brookside insects, but let me save those for another post. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I enjoy sharing them with you.
